Miss Gem City

Melinh Nguyen

Age: 24

Education: BA in Economics from UC Berkeley, current Masters student at the University of Chicago

Platform issue: Mental Illness Awareness

Scholastic Ambition: Phd in Marketing

Scholastic Honors: Dean's List, selected as the commencement student speaker at the UC Berkeley graduation

Career ambition: professor of business administration and a state senator

Favorite place to visit: Almaden, California - where I was born and raised

Favorite wardrobe accessory: simple silver ring my father gave to me after I graduated from college

One thing I can't live without: my Moleskine - I seriously write down everything in it, from grocery lists, funny things my friends say, places I need to travel to, and really bad drawings of my dog, Wren.

Something i'd like to try out of character: a singing class - if you know me, I'm a horrendous singer :)

Platform Statement

"Let's Talk: Mental Illness Awareness and Treatment"

My platform really hits home for me as I have seen my father's battle with mental illness and experienced how hard it was to talk about it to others due to society's stigma against it. Therefore, my platform emphasizes three different areas of focus: awareness, destigmatization, and promoting treatment. I currently volunteer with the National Alliance of Mental Illness and will be speaking at different events to not only bring this hushed topic out into the public, but to make sure it is talked about without shame.
